DR. BERLIN EXPLORES INTERACTIONS OF THE HUMAN BRAIN AND MIND WITH THE GOAL OF CONTRIBUTING TO IMPROVED TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF IMPULSIVE AND COMPULSIVE PSYCHIATRIC AND NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS.

Using neurocognitive tests and neuroimaging (e.g., fMRI, DTI) she investigates the brain basis of impulsivity, compulsivity, and emotion in psychiatric patients and neurological patients with traumatic brain injury. She specializes in the functions of the orbitofrontal and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and their role in decision-making, sensitivity to reward and punishment and time perception, and the insula and its relationship to disgust and body awareness.

She has been involved in experimental trials of deep brain stimulation for treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder and is keenly interested in the neural basis of consciousness, dynamic unconscious processes, and creativity.
